Shipbrokers Association Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.

Schiffsmaklerverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. was founded on 11.10.1990 and today has 17 members. 

The association represents the interests of shipbrokers and other service providers in the maritime sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The association plays a central role in the development and promotion of the maritime sector in the region. 

Schiffsmaklerverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. is listed in the register of associations at Rostock Local Court under the number VR 809 and is a member of Zentralverband Deutscher Schiffsmakler e.V., Hamburg.

The association has thus established itself as an important point of contact for all those working in or interested in the shipping industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

What do shipping and chartering managers do?
In shipping business, a distinction is made between liner and tramp shipping. In liner shipping, ships have fixed routes and schedules, similar to buses, while in tramp shipping, similar to cabs, the ships usually make individually fixed trips with individual dates/routes.

The shipping agents involved are usually active either in the shipowner business or in the ship brokerage business.

There are four categories of shipbrokers in this diverse industry:

Liner agent
The liner agent represents one or more liner shipping companies whose ships regularly dock in his port. He takes care of fast and reliable cargo handling, prepares cargo documents, informs all parties involved and is also an advertising medium for the shipowners on whose behalf he acts.
Among other things, he also organizes the pre- and on-carriage of cargoes.

Chartering broker
The chartering broker acts as an mediator between charterers who are looking for suitable ships to transport their cargo from A to B and shippers who are looking for the next voyages for their ships. The broker forwards suitable offers to the parties and acts as an mediator in the negotiation and subsequent fixing of a freight contract.

Port agent
The port agent ensures a smooth port call for the ship. From ordering the berth and planning the handling work through informing the authorities, arranging local technicians and equipment suppliers and assisting with crew changes, to cargo documents and follow-up work on the call, he is the point of contact for all matters arising from the captain or shipowner.

Buying and selling agent
The buying and selling agent prepares purchase contracts for old tonnage or newly built ships, arranges suitable offers and financing options and advises parties during the selection process. 

Shipping agents therefore not only organize the global transport of goods by ship, but also help captains to make port calls as efficient as possible. 
Shipping agents are in contact with freight forwarders, exporters and shipowners. 

Thanks to their communication skills, shipping agents are valued contacts for cargo handling companies, pilots, tugboats, ship chandlers, classification societies, professional associations and also government institutions such as the water police and port authorities.
